'Rampant' Singapore piracy prompts Hollywood lobby for crackdown | Bangkok Post: news


“Within the Asia-Pacific region, Singapore is the worst in terms of availability of illicit streaming devices,” said Neil Gane, general manager of the Asia-focused coalition, referring to countries where the boxes are considered legal. Online TV and movie piracy will cost the industry an estimated $31.8 billion in global revenue this year, reaching $51.6 billion by 2022, according to London-based Digital TV Research. The Asia-Pacific region will become the largest for online piracy next year, overtaking North America, the researcher said. Many storefronts advertise that these boxes can stream content otherwise unavailable in Singapore. “This includes supporting our broadcast partners in Southeast Asia with their efforts to prevent the sale of illicit streaming devices.”
